CERN Storage Systems for Large-Scale Wireless
The project aims at evaluating the use of CERN computing infrastructure for next generation sensor networks data analysis. The proposed system allows the simulation of a large-scale sensor array for traffic analysis, streaming data to CERN storage systems in an efficient way. The data are made available for offline and quasi-online analysis, enabling both long term planning and fast reaction on the environment
Lattice QCD Thermodynamics on the Grid
We describe how we have used simultaneously nodes of the
EGEE Grid, accumulating ca. 300 CPU-years in 2-3 months, to determine an
important property of Quantum Chromodynamics. We explain how Grid resources
were exploited efficiently and with ease, using user-level overlay based on
Ganga and DIANE tools above standard Grid software stack. Application-specific
scheduling and resource selection based on simple but powerful heuristics
allowed to improve efficiency of the processing to obtain desired scientific
results by a specified deadline. This is also a demonstration of combined use
of supercomputers, to calculate the initial state of the QCD system, and Grids,
to perform the subsequent massively distributed simulations. The QCD simulation
was performed on a lattice. Keeping the strange quark mass at
its physical value, we reduced the masses of the up and down quarks until,
under an increase of temperature, the system underwent a second-order phase
transition to a quark-gluon plasma. Then we measured the response of this
system to an increase in the quark density. We find that the transition is
smoothened rather than sharpened. If confirmed on a finer lattice, this finding
makes it unlikely for ongoing experimental searches to find a QCD critical
point at small chemical potential
A prototype for the real-time analysis of the Cherenkov Telescope Array
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory will be one of the biggest ground-based very-high-energy (VHE) γ- ray observatory. CTA will achieve a factor of 10 improvement in sensitivity from some tens of GeV to beyond 100 TeV with respect to existing telescopes. The CTA observatory will be capable of issuing alerts on variable and transient sources to maximize the scientific return. To capture these phenomena during their evolution and for effective communication to the astrophysical community, speed is crucial. This requires a system with a reliable automated trigger that can issue alerts immediately upon detection of γ-ray flares. This will be accomplished by means of a Real-Time Analysis (RTA) pipeline, a key system of the CTA observatory. The latency and sensitivity requirements of the alarm system impose a challenge because of the anticipated large data rate, between 0.5 and 8 GB/s. As a consequence, substantial efforts toward the optimization of highthroughput computing service are envisioned. For these reasons our working group has started the development of a prototype of the Real-Time Analysis pipeline. The main goals of this prototype are to test: (i) a set of frameworks and design patterns useful for the inter-process communication between software processes running on memory; (ii) the sustainability of the foreseen CTA data rate in terms of data throughput with different hardware (e.g. accelerators) and software configurations, (iii) the reuse of nonreal- time algorithms or how much we need to simplify algorithms to be compliant with CTA requirements, (iv) interface issues between the different CTA systems. Search for heavy neutral lepton production in K+ decays
A search for heavy neutral lepton production in K + decays using a data sample collected with a minimum
bias trigger by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2015 is reported. Upper limits at the 10−7 to 10−6 level
are established on the elements of the extended neutrino mixing matrix |Ue4|
2 and |Uμ4|
2 for heavy
neutral lepton mass in the ranges 170–448 MeV/c2 and 250–373 MeV/c2, respectively. This improves on
the previous limits from HNL production searches over the whole mass range considered for |Ue4|2 and
above 300 MeV/c2 for |Uμ4|2
Lopinavir/Ritonavir and Darunavir/Cobicistat in Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients: Findings From the Multicenter Italian CORIST Study
Background: Protease inhibitors have been considered as possible therapeutic agents for COVID-19 patients. Objectives: To describe the association between lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r) or darunavir/cobicistat (DRV/c) use and in-hospital mortality in COVID-19 patients. Study Design: Multicenter observational study of COVID-19 patients admitted in 33 Italian hospitals. Medications, preexisting conditions, clinical measures, and outcomes were extracted from medical records. Patients were retrospectively divided in three groups, according to use of LPV/r, DRV/c or none of them. Primary outcome in a time-to event analysis was death. We used Cox proportional-hazards models with inverse probability of treatment weighting by multinomial propensity scores. Results: Out of 3,451 patients, 33.3% LPV/r and 13.9% received DRV/c. Patients receiving LPV/r or DRV/c were more likely younger, men, had higher C-reactive protein levels while less likely had hypertension, cardiovascular, pulmonary or kidney disease. After adjustment for propensity scores, LPV/r use was not associated with mortality (HR = 0.94, 95% CI 0.78 to 1.13), whereas treatment with DRV/c was associated with a higher death risk (HR = 1.89, 1.53 to 2.34, E-value = 2.43). This increased risk was more marked in women, in elderly, in patients with higher severity of COVID-19 and in patients receiving other COVID-19 drugs. Conclusions: In a large cohort of Italian patients hospitalized for COVID-19 in a real-life setting, the use of LPV/r treatment did not change death rate, while DRV/c was associated with increased mortality. Within the limits of an observational study, these data do not support the use of LPV/r or DRV/c in COVID-19 patients

In the 18 months since the CHEP03 meeting in San Diego, the HEP community deployed
the current generation of grid technologies in a veracity of settings. Legacy
software as well as recently developed applications was interfaced with middleware
tools to deliver end-to-end capabilities to HEP experiments in different stages of
their life cycles. In a series of data challenges, reprocessing efforts and data
distribution activities the community demonstrated the benefits distributed
computing can offer and the power a range of middleware tools can deliver. After
running millions of jobs, moving tera-bytes of data, creating millions of files and
resolving hundreds of bug reports, the community also exposed the limitations of
these middleware tools. As we move to the next level of challenges, requirements
and expectations, we must also examine the methods and procedures we employ to
develop, implement and maintain our common suite of middleware tools. The talk will
focus on the role common middleware developed by the scientific community can and
should play in the software stack of current and future HEP experiments
